Seattle Mariners - Overview (2024)

  • LoganGilbert

    SEA Starting Pitcher #36

Logan Gilbert shut out the Angels for seven innings, striking out nine, in a no-decision Sunday.

Gilbert allowed just two hits before leaving with a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, it disappeared immediately in the eighth, as Ryne Stanek hurt himself on a leadoff walk and Austin Voth went on to give up a three-run homer to take a loss. It’s the fifth time this season that Gilbert has gone without allowing a run. He’s a worthy All-Star as he finishes the first half with a 2.79 ERA, but he won’t get to pitch in the game after working today.

  • JurrangeloCijntje

    SEA Starting Pitcher

Mariners selected Mississippi State SHP Jurrangelo Cijntje with the No. 15 selection of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Yep, a switch-pitcher. Cijntje made 16 starts for the Bulldogs in 2024 with a 3.67 ERA and 113/30 K/BB over his 90 2/3 innings. Those numbers aren’t spectacular, but the 21-year-old is considered one of the most athletic pitchers in the class who offers more upside than your typical collegiate arm. As a right-hander he throws his heater up to 98 mph with an above-average slider, while he shows that same breaking-ball as a southpaw and typically sits in the low 90s. There’s some talk that Cijntje may just move to right-handed pitching full-time, but either way, the chance to miss bats as a starter makes him worth consideration in dynasty leagues.

  • Ryne Stanek was removed from Sunday’s outing against the Angels in the eighth inning due to an apparent injury.

The 32-year-old hurler took over for Logan Gilbert in the eighth inning and issued a four-pitch walk to Mickey Moniak on which none of the offerings were particularly close. Something looked off, which prompted a visit from the training staff and his ultimate removal from the ballgame. He’ll head for further evaluation to determine exactly what’s going on there. Stay tuned.

  • JulioRodriguez

    SEA Center Fielder #44

Julio Rodríguez went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday in the Mariners’ loss to the Angels.

Rodríguez was responsible for plating Seattle’s lone run of the contest courtesy of a run-scoring single in the opening frame off Angels starter José Soriano. The 23-year-old outfielder should benefit exponentially from next weeks’ All-Star break as it’ll give him an opportunity to hopefully put a lingering quad issue to bed with some extra rest and also allow him to work on his swing out of the spotlight.

  • GeorgeKirby

    SEA Starting Pitcher #68

George Kirby struck out seven and was charged with two runs (one earned) over six innings on Saturday in a loss to the Angels.

Kirby certainly deserved better in this one as he got exactly one run of support from Seattle’s offense in his final outing of the first half. He generated 12 swinging strikes and finished with a pedestrian 30 percent CSW. He’ll bring a respectable 3.29 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 116/13 K/BB ratio across 117 2/3 innings (20 starts) into the All-Star break.

  • CalRaleigh

    SEA Catcher #29

Cal Raleigh homered in an extra-inning loss for the Mariners to the Angels on Friday.

Raleigh also singled and drew an intentional walk. The homer was a two-run blast to give Seattle a 4-2 lead, and it also gave the switch-hitting backstop his 20th homer; the first time a Mariner catcher has hit that many home runs before the All-Star break. Raleigh was not a consistent threat in May or June, but he’s been spectacular in July and should be a strong fantasy option for the remainder of 2024.

  • JulioRodriguez

    SEA Center Fielder #44

Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run homer while going 3-for-5 in an extra-inning loss to the Angels on Friday.

The man they call J-Rod smashed an opposite-field homer with Mitch Garver on off Tyler Anderson to give Seattle a 2-0 lead and Rodríguez his 10th homer of the campaign. He also singled twice. Fantasy managers are far too familiar with how streaky the 23-year-old has been over his career, but one of those hot runs appears to be happening just before the break.

  • BryanWoo

    SEA Starting Pitcher #22

Bryan Woo gave up nine hits and four runs in a no-decision against the Angels on Friday while working 3 1/3 innings.

Woo gave up a two-run homer to Willie Calhoun in the first and another two runs in the fourth, and the 24-year-old scuffled between those frames as well. It was his first start back since June 24 when he went on the injured list with a hamstring strain, and it was not an effective one. He allowed nine hits and walked two with just one strikeout in very easily his worst start of the 2024 season. Woo offers some fantasy appeal, but there’s some risk in a second-year hurler who doesn’t offer elite swing-and-miss stuff.

  • AndresMunoz

    SEA Relief Pitcher #75

Mariners right-hander Andrés Muñoz was named to the American League All-Star team as a replacement for Logan Gilbert.

Gilbert wasn’t going to be able to pitch in the game, so the American League squad will add another lockdown right-hander to their late inning mix. It’s the first time in his career that he has made the All-Star team. He’s certainly deserving, having posted a 1.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and a 45/16 K/BB ratio over 37 1/3 innings on the season to go along with 15 saves and a pair of victories.

  • EduardBazardo

    SEA Relief Pitcher #83

Mariners optioned RHP Eduard Bazardo to Triple-A Tacoma.

With Bryan Woo set to return from the injured list on Friday, someone needed to get the boot from the active roster and unfortunately Bazardo pulled the short straw this time around. He’ll continue to hone his craft at the Triple-A level until he’s needed once more.
